Last September 2007 saw another start for the Junior Rifle Club, something that has been going on since almost as long as the club itself. The current director and Head Coach is Royce Brown. Royce has been coaching the juniors since 1994, when he took over from Bob Pickering and Gene Ducker after working as their assistant coach. Royce has seen a few of the juniors take state honors in the JORC (Junior Olympic Rifle Championships), one has gone on to a military academy, two have gone on to college on a partial shooting scholarship and one has returned to help coach.
The type of shooting that is instructed is ISU (International Shooting Union) 3-position and NRA 4-position and 3-position smallbore rifle, and as they progress they get more training on air rifle and air pistol, plus other disciplines that the club has to offer such as cowboy shooting, highpower rifle and silhouette. Shooting is one of the very few sports that anyone can enjoy almost their entire life as a participant and the junior program is open to anyone that is between the ages of 11 and 19, girl or boy.
In the photos below, two of the juniors are shown shooting at a distance of 50 feet at a target that is less than two inches in diameter with the intent of placing the shot inside of a circle that is .24 inches in diameter. This must be done 10 times to obtain a score.
